Getting to grips with ID cards

Issue 33 - December 2009

Business Link has produced a useful briefing on the three types of ID card (all with subtly different names) that are now in circulation and that employers may be presented with as proof of identity or right to work:
  • The National Identity Card for British citizens was launched to residents of Greater Manchester on 26 November. It can be used to travel within the EEA in the same way as a passport and proves the holder has the right to work in the UK.
  • The Identification Card for EEA and Swiss nationals – this does not confer an automatic right to work and is not a replacement for a passport .
  • The Identity Card for foreign nationals contains details of the holder’s right to work. It is not a travel document.
