Brenda Barber has called for the adult rate to rise to £6 per hour. The TUC’s view is that this would substantially address the gender pay gap as two thirds of those who would benefit would be women. Incidentally, 30 October 2009 was Equal Pay Day – the day that women got their last pay packet for this year based on the 17.1% gender pay gap.
On a NMW for apprentices, potentially due for implementation in October 2010, the TUC proposes:
- £3.00 - £3.18 for 16 - 17 year olds
- £4.05 - £4.29 for 18 - 20 year olds
- £4.87 - £5.15 for those aged 21 or over
