Statistics show that drivers are four times more likely to be involved in a car crash when using a mobile phone as it has a serious effect on concentration and considerably distracts the individual’s awareness and reactions when driving.
Penalties
Since December 2003, drivers have been prohibited from using a mobile phone or a similar device whilst driving.
The current penalty is a £60.00 fine and three penalty points added to the driver’s licence (or a fine of £1000.00 if the offender is summoned to court).
Encouraging Safe Working Practices
Employers are required to take reasonable measures to ensure that the employee protects themselves and others whilst driving.
As an employer, you are required to encourage safe working practices and minimise the risks associated with the use of mobile phones whilst driving. Possible measures include:
- Producing a company policy that outlines the employer and employees’ obligations, responsibilities and expectations regarding the use of mobile phones;
- Raising awareness of the dangers of using mobile phones whilst driving and ensuring employees are fully aware of any relevant procedures in place at the company;
- Encouraging safer journeys and working practices to protect employees and others whilst driving;
- Recording and investigating any crashes or incidents thoroughly to identify any risks. Instigating appropriate resolutions where necessary.
