Massive upsurge over tax return e-mail 'phishing' scam
Issue 34 - February 2010
According to a BBC report, tens of thousands of fraudulent e-mails were sent out ahead of January's tax return deadline. Recipients are told they are due a tax refund and asked to fill in an online form with bank or credit card details. Victims have their accounts emptied or card limits used, and risk having the details sold to other criminal gangs. HMRC are again warning taxpayers not to respond to the "phishing" e-mails, as it informs customers of a refund by post only. If you have received one of these emails please forward it to phishing@hmrc.gsi.gov.uk.
